iPhone 6 "delay launch" is… no, wait, I can't stop laughing

A story detailing a “delay” in the launch of the iPhone 6 highlights exactly what’s wrong with the Apple rumour cycle.
There’s a story up at MacRumors right now quoting an analyst stating that the 5.5″ inch supposed* iPhone 6 “may be delayed into 2015” due to production issues.
Excuse me while I chortle.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH.

Yeah, OK, that wasn’t so much a chortle as a full on guffaw. Sometimes these things are necessary.
Not that it wouldn’t be a potential issue for Apple if it doesn’t deliver a new smartphone in 2014, but then I seriously doubt that will be a particular problem. iPhone 6 in 2014? Quite likely, if not downright plausible.
No, the reason I chortle is because it highlights precisely what’s wrong with reading too much into the rumour sites in the first place.
How on earth can you have a “delay” on a product that isn’t even announced yet?
You can’t, by very definition. Even the actual story deflates itself, quoting the same analyst as stating that he “believes that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may not launch by the end of 2014, or may launch after October in very limited quantities.”
Or in other words, guesswork and supposition. Nothing to see here, folks, move along. I’m just the guy giggling in the corner. You’d be better off trying to cross the bridge of death:
