Read This: Clickbait, iKlein and writer rejection

Stories that caught my eye today from around the web, including how to deal with writing rejection and someone determined enough to really catch them all.

  • You won’t believe what Facebook’s done to its news feed! Actually, you might, as the search giant is rejigging the way it makes those annoying clickbaity headlines appear to devalue the art form that is writing rubbish headlines.
  • Want to catch them all in Pokémon GO? Somebody has, and it involved travelling to Australia specifically to catch Kangaskhan. I like the game, and said as much in a recent Vertical Hold, but I’d draw the line at flying around the planet to collect imaginary creatures. Just me?
  • Hey, remember when Apple vs Samsung wasn’t a sales issue but a legal one? Turns out it still is. Apple’s latest allies in its battle against the Korean technology giant (who, as I so frequently point out to folks, also makes missiles, so I’m wary of ticking them off too much…)? Calvin Klein. Really.
  • Large weird pointy dogs are awesome. Sure, I’m more of a cat person, but if you’re after a dog, consider a large weird pointy dog. You won’t regret it.
  • I keep telling myself that I should add a classic arcade machine to my collection of retro gaming stuff. Space (not to mention cost) is an issue, but this guide to a tabletop arcade game might just solve that. Now, if only I was any good at woodworking…
  • I’m a big fan of comics scribe Mark Evanier’s blog, and he’s continuing on with a very well written series on dealing with rejection if you’re a writer, now into its 13th part. No, I’ve never written anything for Hollywood like he has (although the rights for Sharksplosion are available if anyone’s interested), but it’s good solid writing advice anyway.
  • And finally, not new in any way, but this video gets 10/10 for retro game references, but also 10/10 for me feeling like a very old man indeed, because this “music” sounds just like shouting to me. Strong language warning, as if the still image didn’t make that obvious. Now, if you’d be kind enough to GET OFF MY LAWN…

Read this is just random things I find and like. You may enjoy them too. Or not; it’s a free and wide web.
