LG G Watch R dodges Australia tax

The LG G Watch R, LG’s round followup to its first Android Wear watch will go on sale in Australia for $359, which is slightly cheaper than the US list price.
The G Watch R features a round face, similar to the Motorola 360, and like Motorola’s Android timepiece, it’s pitching towards the more expensive end of the smartwatch price scale. For those who love their specifications, here’s the basic rundown of the tech under the screen of the G Watch R

  • Chipset: 1.2GHz Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 400

  • Display: 1.3-inch P-OLED Display (320 x 320)
  • Memory: 4GB eMMC / 512MB RAM
  • Battery: 410mAh
  • Operating System: Android WearTM (compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above)
  • Sensors: 9-Axis (Gyro/ Accelerometer/ Compass), Barometer, PPG
  • Colour: Black
  • Other: Dust and Water Resistant (IP67)

The battery is slightly larger than on the G Watch, although LG representatives told Fat Duck Tech that they didn’t expect it to last two full days, so you’re still looking at an overnight recharge situation.

More sensors, more battery capacity -- but essentially the same battery life.

The US list price is $300, but as with all things American, that doesn’t include sales tax. Pop ten per cent for GST onto the $US300 price and you’re at $US330, which equates at today’s exchange rate to around $385.
LG’s RRP for the G Watch R in Australia will be $359, which means that once you take tax and conversion into account, we’re getting a much better deal this time around. It’ll go on sale via Google Play to Australians this afternoon, though you’ll pay a little more there once you take shipping into account.
