Doctor Who: Vivid 50th Anniversary Video & Pics

WhoVivid
It was, as they say, a dark and stormy night as Sydney’s Vivid Festival presented a 50th Anniversary tribute to Doctor Who. Of course I was going to go… and get rather damp in the process. But if you couldn’t make it, I’ve got pics, video and analysis. Also sore feet.
It was seriously wet and windy, and not the kind of night for anyone — least of all an ageing Time Lord — to be out and about.

The Doctor will be fine. Damp, but fine.

But that didn’t stop the crowds from massing in front of Sydney’s Customs House at Circular Quay.
It's raining, just a bit. That doesn't seem to have dampened crowd numbers much.

I took one look at the crowds — and decamped to the station above instead for a much better view. I figured that somebody, somewhere would put video of it up on YouTube… but didn’t figure it’d be Vivid themselves. If that’s all you want… here it is!

Strax. Of course.

Cybermen in abundance. But no Daleks. At a guess, Terry Nation's estate strikes again...

Now would be a bad time to blink.

Lots of crowd feedback for the big effects, which you really don't get in the video above.

Was it worth the trek, the rain and the tired feet? Yep, it was; there’s something about being in a large crowd of fanatical Doctor Who fans — and given the weather, you’ve got to think a big percentage of them were fanatical Whovians. Many were annoyed at the lack of Daleks, but that’s almost certainly going to be a licensing issue; my larger criticism would be that for a light show that was meant to celebrate “50 Years” of Doctor Who, it was all exceptionally Matt Smith-centric. Less than a second for each of the classic doctors?
50 Years of Doctor Who. Less than a split second of William Hartnell. There's something not quite right there...
