Movember, Day 25: Get your Mo'tor running…

Or what drives Alex to be so particularly keen on Movember…

Yeah, I know… this should have been up last night. But it’s been incredibly busy, what with the Mo to grow, wax, light appropriately, as well as all the darned paperwork. Did you know you need a rather expensive Mo’ licence?
No? Well, neither did I, because that bit’s complete rubbish. But I have been busy with family and work issues to deal with, along with only a modicum of sleep. Also working out the best way to write today’s update as well, as I’d promised to delve a little deeper into why I’m so particularly passionate about Movember.
But first, today’s cash update, and it’s a good one. We’ve hit $810, getting ever so slowly closer to the $1,000 target. Huge thanks to the awesome and wonderful Gail, Polly and Corrie. All of the “lovely lady” persuasion. Hey, maybe the much feted Kidman charm actually does work…
No, on second thoughts, maybe not.
Still, back to motivation.Movember supports Men’s Health issues, and it’d be rather glib and easy for me to say that I’m a bloke and ergo likely to benefit. But there’s more than that personally for me here. The two areas that Movember concentrates on are prostate cancer and depression. Now, I’m in the unusual position for someone my age in having had a prostate exam — not due to cancer — and while I can’t say that it’s the most comfortable thing ever, it’s not something that’s really touched me personally. Well, what with what a prostate exam involves, I guess it has touched me “personally” (and warmer gloves would have been nice), but anyway…
Depression is something I can speak to with, regrettably enough, some authority. I’ve had three major periods of depression in my life — once in my early teens, again in my late teens and then in my mid-twenties, an episode that I very nearly didn’t come out the other side of. And that really isn’t a glib assertion, either. Without the love and support of my nearest family, I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be here growing a silly moustache right now. Depression is the pits, and it’s something that’s all too easy to keep hidden away inside yourself for far too long (as I very nearly did). While it’s been a fairly long time since I’ve had a major depressive bout, it’s still something that I struggle with to this day, on and off.
And that, in a not-terribly-amusing-the-way-the-other-updates-have-been way, is the reason why I’m so keen to gather up funds for Movember. And you can help, as I once again ready the might copy and paste keys, by…
