Samsung SSD T1 Review [Video]

Samsung’s latest external storage device, the SSD T1 is very fast and very light, except on your wallet.
That’s the benefit, and in many ways, the curse of SSDs; they’re fast and very light, but they’re not exactly cheap, which means that drives like the Samsung SSD T1 are something of a niche product best suited for those who need serious speed above all else.

  1. Great review, as always Alex. Just one question though, I’ve heard it said that the solid state drives don’t like constant adding and deleting of files, as that somehow damages their capabilities (more so then for hdd equivalents). Is this still true, was it ever and how does this one bear up by comparison?

    1. Short form answer: Maybe.
SSDs do have a lifespan of read and write cycles that’s rather more determined than those of an HDD, but the reality in general for modern drives is that there’s really only two states: failed and waiting to fail. For a portable drive like this, I’d say you’d be mad to use it without backup anyway, because it’d so easily be lost (or possibly crushed, as referred to in the review) long before its read cycles ran out.
But there’s lots of conflicting data out there. The real practical-but-boring lesson is backup, backup and backup again. And then maybe again, just to be safe.
