Telstra's 2G network gets its death notice

Telstra’s announced that its 2G network will be told to packet in by the end of 2016.
Telstra’s stated that its 2G GSM network, which it’s run for over two decades now will be quietly retired by the end of 2016.
In a post on Telstra’s Exchange blog, Telstra’s Mike Wright notes that 2G traffic currently counts for less than one per cent of total network traffic.
I’m sure the rise of smartphones has had something to do with that; Telstra itself hasn’t flogged a 2G-only device for quite some time now. It also comes in a week where Telstra’s announced it’s trialling 700Mhz network technology across a number of trial sites. 2G has clearly had its time in the sun.
So, in the wise words of one Arnold Rimmer, B.S.C, S.S.C, “It’s a kindness. Like a blind old incontinent sheepdog, he’s had his day. Take him out to the barn with a double-barrelled shot-gun and blow the mother away.”
OK, that’s not exactly how Telstra would put it, but the sentiment is the same.
