Are prepaid iPhones always cheaper?

A lot of conventional wisdom says that a prepaid iPhone — that is, one that you pay for upfront and match to a prepaid telco offer — is cheaper than the contract equivalent. But do the sums actually add up?
Over at Lifehacker, That Other Kidman Bloke(tm) has run through a solid analysis of the cheapest ways to pick up the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus in Australia under current contract conditions.
It’s a solid piece, with some interesting results, because it’s not 100 per cent clear cut and dried in either direction depending on both device and carrier.
