Previous generations have been jailbroken wide open, but not the third generation. It turns out, however, that you don’t need to jailbreak it to get it streaming other media — just fool it a little.
I’ve covered the efforts of the PlexConnect project, which tricks the third generation Apple TV into thinking that a Plex server is actually the Trailers app. It’s a neat enough hack (disclaimer: I haven’t had time to test it myself just yet) for those wanting more media compatibility out of their Apple TV.
