NBN Speed Tool shows startling differences between full-speed FTTP and FTTN

James Brotchie’s How Fast Is The NBN? gives an interesting visual representation of the differences between the current NBN FTTP rollout and the Coalition-proposed FTTN NBN.
It’s a great way to get a grip on how different connection speeds really affect real-world situations, although there are a few caveats. Firstly, obviously, Brotchie’s estimating the upload speed of a Coalition FTTN connection at 5Mbps; as I noted yesterday one of the truly irritating factors in the Coalition policy is that Malcolm Turnbull won’t commit in any way to an upload minimum, so this is just a guess.. albeit a fair one.
Equally, it’s worth noting that his plans work off a 1000/400 Mbps FTTP plan (which won’t be coming down any NBN pipe until later this year) and only a 25/5 Mbps FTTN; as per yesterday’s debate, Turnbull estimates the 25Mbps figure as “a floor, not a cap”, although you wouldn’t see any FTTN connections at all in calendar year 2013, given the Coalition policy of having a full review in any case before committing to any broadband rollout at all. Also interesting to note; Brotchie describes himself as always having voted Liberal, but now being disaffected with all political parties. Make of that what you will.
