$160 worth of Android Apps for free? I'll take three!

AmazonFreeApps
Until midnight Saturday, Amazon Australia’s offering $160 worth of apps for absolutely no money down. I spoke to Amazon Australia’s Stuart Sayers about the bundle.
Amazon’s had an offering of a single free app a day through its Android App store for a number of years now, but this is quite an exceptionally large bundle. According to Sayers,
“We want to give the best possible offers we can to as many Australians as we can and so we are running the promotion starting tonight. We think that the 30 or so apps and the the $160 of apps for free is something that consumers will want.”
It is essentially just a promotional play, with Sayers noting that “What we get out of it is more customers exposed to our brand and our offering.”
It’s not clear if Amazon’s absorbing the costs of the apps itself or requiring developers to either offer them free or take a smaller payment. Sayers wouldn’t be drawn on the commercial arrangements behind the deal, but did note that “This is all about generating awareness for those guys; getting those apps in front of as many people as they can.”
In order to actually get the apps you’ll need an Amazon account, and then to download the Amazon Australia app store from www.amazon.com.au/appstore.
Actually, that’s the convoluted way to do it, as I’ve discovered this morning. Easiest option is to do a web search from your Android browser for “Amazon App Store”; that’ll send you to a link for the app, and as long as your account is tied into the Australian store it should work. It has for me.
Installing the App store also involves allowing installation of third party applications on your Android device, generally cited as a security risk. As such, if you want the apps by all means grab them, but I’d suggest disabling third party app stores once you’ve got them. If they need updates, you can always manually re-enable third party apps again.
To be specific, the Apps Amazon’s giving away to Australians for the low low price of nothing are the following. The usual Amazon price is listed afterwards; it’s worth noting that the Android price for the same app may differ, but hey — it’s still free right now:
* Plex ($5.52)
* Sonic The Hedgehog 2 ($3.34)
* Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek ($3.24)
* AccuWeather Platinum ($3.24)
* OfficeSuite Professional 7 ($16.23)
* PUZZINGO Puzzles (Pro Edition) ($15.91)
* Travel Interpreter ($10.82)
* Ravensword: Shadowlands ($7.64)
* EZ Money Manager ($10.78)
* Notepad+ ($1.99)
* MyBackup Pro ($5.71)
* Dr. Panda’s Bus Driver ($2.99)
* Jump Desktop ($10.82)
* League of Heroes Premium ($3.24)
* Root Explorer ($4.25)
* Pinball Deluxe Premium ($3.16)
* Pho.to Lab PRO ($3.24)
* Sudoku 10’000 Plus ($2.70)
* Smart RAM Booster Pro ($2.86)
* Real Shanghai Mahjong ($2.16)
* CrossMe Premium ($5.36)
* Dungeon Village ($4.83)
* Pocket Informant 3 ($10.71)
* 2Do: Todo List | Task List ($7.57)
* Loco Motors ($2.11)
* Business Calendar ($5.40)
* Wedding Dash Deluxe ($1.07)
* Splashtop Remote Desktop HD ($9.74)
* MobiLearn Talking Phrasebook (English-French-German-Italian-Spanish) ($10.82)
* Music Kitchen Timer ($1.85)
* CLARC ($4.99)
* acalendar+ ($4.29)
* Card Wars – Adventure Time (Kindle Tablet Edition) ($4.29)
* The Room Two (Kindle Tablet Edition) ($2.99)

Those last two apps are specifically the Kindle edition versions, so unless you’re browsing the Amazon App store on a Kindle Fire, you won’t see them available.
I’ll take three highlights products that are not only discounted, but which I reckon are good value as well. Cheap isn’t always the same thing as great.
